BRIEF: Lawmaker adamant about adding Vice President Joe Biden's name to bridge already named after WWI veteran

Times-Tribune - 2/4/2017

Feb. 04--SCRANTON -- State Rep. Kevin Haggerty is sticking to his idea to add Vice President Joe Biden's name to a Harrison Avenue Bridge already named for a World War I veteran.

On Thursday, city council agreed to ask Mr. Haggerty, D-112, Dunmore, to drop his idea, because the bridge under construction already is named for Col. Frank Duffy, the highest-ranking soldier from Lackawanna County killed in World War I.

On Friday, Mr. Haggerty sent a letter to The Times-Tribune saying he still intends to introduce a bill in June to add Mr. Biden's name to the bridge.

Councilman Pat Rogan is disappointed in Mr. Haggerty's stance.

"If the bridge was unnamed and there was a debate on how to name it, it would be different," Mr. Rogan said. "I wish Rep. Haggerty would step back from this and let's work together and find another way to honor Vice President Joe Biden."
